There was a lot going on in our multicultural projects last week. Intercultural gatherings, home work assistance, "Let's read the papers" were among the activites that took place.
Students in 9th grade in Austurbæjarskóli had an intercultural gathering on Monday and Tuesday. Students presented their culture for their fellow students and parents. At intercultural gatherings students reveal new and creative sides that usually come as a surprise not just for their parents and teachers but even for students themselves. Visual arts, movies, music, literarture and dances were among the features presented by students.
As usual students were studying and having fun in Heilahristingur home work assistance that takes place in the main library on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in Gerðubergssafn branch on Wednesdays and in Kringlusafn branch on Mondays.
Volunteers, taking part in Heilahristingur home work assistance, spent time together and had a training on Thursday. They had a chance to chat with experienced studies and educational advisers about the best possible ways to provide homework assistance. Arnbjörg Eiðsdóttir who has extensive experience of multicultural consulting in Reykjavik elementary schools gave a short but informative speech.
Reykjavik City Library and Icelandic Red Cross Reykjavik branch are grateful to the volunteers for their contribution. They dedicate themselves to volunteering and one could say that they play a key role in students’ lives.
Like every Thursday „Let´s Read the Papers“ was on at 5.30 pm. People from China, Lithuania, Croatia, United Kingdom and Poland attended and studied the news of the week. Lively discussions took place and Einar, the host of the meeting, did his best to answer various questions about the Icelandic society.
On Friday an Introduction to the Library took place in the main library for pupils in Fjölbrautaskólinn í Breiðholti. It is always nice to have young people visiting and we are so proud thata a visit to the library forms a part of their study of the Icelandic language.
