Lending rules and tariff
In general, books and other materials are only lent to people domiciled in Iceland, but visitors and tourists are welcome to use the reference sections, reading rooms, computers, etc.
Books and other materials from the library's collection can be borrowed on presentation of a library card. The card is valid for one year and can be used in all branches and mobile libraries.
Library cards are free of charge to children (under 18), senior citizens and people with disabilities.
The annual charge for the card is stated in the library's tariff.
ID must be produced when a card is purchased.
Children (under 18) applying for a card need to produce a form signed by their parent or guardian accepting responsibility for borrowed material. Forms are available from library branches.
Library users must produce their own library card to borrow books and other material.
Cardholders bear full responsibility for any material borrowed from the library which is registered against their card.
The library should be notified immediately if a library card is lost.
The normal borrowing period is 30 days. Shorter loan periods are stated specifically. Late returns are liable to a daily fine according to the tariff.
Library material may be reserved. A nominal charge is made for reservations and stated in the tariff. A loan may be renewed twice unless the book or other material in question has been reserved.
Borrowers are entitled to full information about their outstanding loans from the library.
Borrowers may return books, etc. to any branch, including mobile libraries.
Borrowers are liable for any loss of or damage to library property in their care.
Cardholders should notify the library of any change in their address or telephone number.
