About us

Welcome to the library

Does the Reykjavik City Library have anything to offer you? Come for a visit and find out.
All are welcome at the library. Here you can read books and magazines, browse the internet, meet people, take part in events, view exhibitions, have a cup of coffee, relax and enjoy yourself. You’ll need a library card to borrow books and other materials. Children under eighteen, people with disabilities and senior citizens are eligible for free cards. Others must pay a small fee as listed in the posted price list.

The City Library has six branches throughout Reykjavik as well as the bookmobile called ‘the Chief ‘(bókabíllinn Höfðingi), and the story mobile, named ‘the Jester’ (Æringi). The bookmobile visits nearly forty locations and the story mobile visits preschools and afterschool day-care centres.

The library contains an ample selection of books, fiction and nonfiction, in Icelandic and other languages. Popular films and documentaries are also available. There is also a wide selection of music that includes pop, rock and roll, classical, hip hop, opera and many other varieties. Comic book enthusiasts will enjoy the library’s rapidly expanding comic book section which includes manga (Japanese comic books), the characters Tintin and Asterix among others as well as the various superheroes

The library’s branches offer computer use and internet access for a reasonable fee. Free Wi-Fi access is also available.

All the branches each have a children’s section which contains a large variety of material including books in various languages, magazines, films, cartoons and music. The section is designed for the small ones where they can enjoy reading, board games, putting together a jigsaw puzzle and playing.  The library also offers various events for children. During the winter months, on Sundays, story times and arts and crafts are offered. Also, family mornings, a blending of fun, education and companionship, are weekly events.

The library continuously offers multicultural features. Among several, there is the Women’s story circle, homework assistance for children and young people, story times in different languages and literary tours of Reykjavik given in English. Many events are hosted throughout the year, admittance is free and all are welcome.

The city library provides many services and the staff are always pleased and prepared to render any assistance. We seek and welcome ideas and recommendations. Do not hesitate to give us a visit or browse our website.
