India in Focus III | All about Ayurveda, Exotic Spices and Herbs

Saturday March 16th 2024

IN ICELANDIC

The word Ayurveda derives from the words life and knowledge or science and is about how to live a holistic life. Shilpa Khatri Babbar talks about this ancient medical system and how it is connected to the exotic spices and flavors, which make Indian food one of the most popular cuisines across the globe. Cooking or eating in India is not a random activity but involves a focus on several related aspects, such as hunger, appetite, ingredients, the process of cooking, the environment in which it is cooked, the mood of the person cooking, serving style, eating style, and digestion.

The lecture will be in English.

Shilpa is a Sociologist from India and has been teaching University students for almost 25 years. From 2022, she has been the Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Iceland, by ICCR - the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.

Shilpa will give lectures at Reykjavik City Library Grófin, three Saturdays in March, on the concept of Yog, the ancient healing system Ayurveda and Indian cuisine. India for her is not just geography but a string of spiritual, cultural, social, and philosophical beads that has enabled the country to sustain itself as one of the most ancient living civilizations. To share important aspects from the ancient wisdom and the diversely colorful culture of the country, she has set her journey as a carrier of Indian fragrance across the globe.
