Lunchtime Melodies I Heyday of Icelandic Tango

Saturday April 13th 2024

Reykjavik City Library Gerðuberg - Friday the 12th of April from 12:15-13:00
Reykjavik City Library Spöngin - Saturday the 13th of April from 13:15-14:00

The mid-20th century was the heyday of Icelandic tango music. Many of Iceland’s most beloved songwriters wrote beautiful tangos during that period, such as Oddgeir Kristjánsson, Bjarni Böðvarsson, Friðrik Jónsson, Vilhelmína Baldvinsdóttir and Tólfti september.

The singer Þorgerður Ása Aðalsteinsdóttir and the accordionist Ásta Soffía Þorgeirsdóttir will perform a collection of Icelandic tango songs at the concert along with Leifur Gunnarsson, double bass player.

The concert is an outcome of Ásta Soffía’s research project on Icelandic tangos, which she received funds for from the cultural fund of the Icelandic Central Bank. Ása and Ásta share an interest and passion for this music heritage and would like those beautiful tangos to sound more often.

Lunchtime Melodies is a new concert series at the library in collaboration with double bass player Leifur Gunnarsson. Leifur, together with selected well known musicians from the scene, will perform each time.

Free entry and everyone is welcome!
